Welcome back to the horror, my friends! Now that 2025 is in full swing, I’ve thought about what horror films I’m looking forward to this year. I was surprised by the number of sequels I want to see out of the list. So, I came up with a list of the thirteen horror films I wanted to see the most. I only hope they fare better than The Wolf Man.
Only four of the movies on my list are new properties. A whopping nine are either sequels or classic story re-imaginings. I will start off with the new properties, and move to the rest the list.
- Dust Bunny– Bryan Fuller’s directorial debut features Sigourney Weaver and Mads Mikkelsen. An 8-year-old girl who believes a monster under her bed ate her family enlists the aid of her neighbor to kill the beast. This sounds like it could be a ton of fun.
- Death of a Unicorn– Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Tea Leoni, and Will Poulter lead the cast in a film about a family hitting and killing a unicorn with their car. The trouble begins when they take it to the wilderness retreat of a wealthy pharma company CEO. The first trailer made me laugh at the absurdity of it all, and I can’t wait to see it.
- The Monkey—This film is based on one of Stephen King’s stories that freaked me out as a kid. The creepy monkey toy in the trailer reminds me of why I hate those toys.
- Sinners– Ryan Coogler directs Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld in a period piece about two brothers leaving their troubled lives behind to return home and try to start again. They find a greater evil at home waiting to welcome them back. I’m excited to see Coogler handle a horror film.
- Saw XI– Is Jigsaw back? I don’t care; I enjoy the series, and Saw X was a great return to form.
- The Conjuring: Last Rites– I do not believe in the Warrens, but I like the films well enough.
- Megan 2.0– The first movie surprised me, and I’m curious to see how they handle a sequel. I’m hoping it doesn’t feel too much like a remake of the Child’s Play remake.
- The Black Phone 2– The first film based on the Joe Hill short story was great. I want to see the direction the sequel will take since the first film covered the story pretty thoroughly.
- Final Destination: Bloodlines– Another of my guilty pleasure movie franchises. I love watching the series to see how many different ways the writers can kill people who cheat death. I liked the first trailer and am very curious about how it ties to the previous movies since they are going with Bloodlines in the title.
- 28 Years Later– Danny Boyle returns to his zombie franchise in this long-awaited sequel. How has humanity survived in a world after the Rage Virus was released into the population? The first trailer looked like everything we loved about The Walking Dead before it went off the rails. I hope Boyle knew what he was doing when he decided to make this film.
- Return to Silent Hill– This is slated to be released this year but may be delayed (rumor has it looking for a distributor). The movie is heavily based on the Silent Hill 2 game, and it’s my favorite of the game franchise. I love the games, and I liked the movies as well, but they get a bad rap from people. I want to like this, and I hope I do.
- Frankenstein– This take on the creature is from Guillermo del Torro and is coming to Netflix later this year. It features a stellar cast with Oscar Issac, Charles Dance, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth. Frankenstein is one of my favorite Universal Monsters, and I think the del Torro version will be visually stunning. Will the story still resonate the same? We’ll find out in November when it drops on Netflix.
- The Bride– I’m really interested to see how this turns out. Maggie Gyllenhaal directs this version set in the 1930s, in which Frankenstein asks Dr. Euphronius to create a companion for him. Christian Bale stars as Frankenstein, and the cast also features Jake Gyllenhaal, Annette Bening, and Jesse Buckley as the Bride.
Well, that wraps up this list. There were a few others, but I had to cut it off somewhere, and thirteen seemed appropriate. What are you excited about in horror cinema this year? Sound off in the comments below!
Thanks for stopping in, and I’ll see you at the movies,
Brent
