Welcome to Our Darkest Fears! So far, I’ve been kind of disappointed in the horror offerings we’ve had in 2025. The genre has featured some highly disappointing films from the usually dependable Blumhouse and pretty much everyone else. Yes, we had Sinners, a fantastic flick, but we also had Megan 2.0 and Wolf Man on the other end of the spectrum. Honestly, I’m not even sure the Megan sequel rates as a horror film to me. 2025 is still solid for new horror films, and we haven’t seen some of the best to come. Which horror films am I looking forward to for the rest of the year?
Let’s dig a little deeper into the graveyard dirt and find out.
5. V/H/S Halloween– I’m guilty of loving a good found footage film, and the V/H/S franchise is something I enjoy for a watch. The horror anthology series is set to release its new entry on Shudder on October 3rd. Will it measure up? We’ll find out soon!
4. The Strangers: Chapter 2– This film drops as I write this, so I’ll have to get to it ASAP. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first movie, but I say I’ll give any horror movie a chance. The biggest issue for me was that I felt the plot and characters were very generic. A couple in a remote small town has their car sabotaged by the locals and have to stay the night in a cabin where they are terrorized by a group of masked crazies. Blah, blah, blah, but since I spent the time watching the first part of this story, I’m game to try out the second half.
3. Frankenstein– I have high hopes for this new adaptation of one of my favorite books and classic Universal Monsters. Since Guillermo del Toro wrote the script and directed, I know it will be visually stunning, but I pray the story sticks the landing as well. Frankenstein will see a limited theatrical release on October 17th before streaming on Netflix on November 7th.
2. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2– Who doesn’t like a good horror movie for Christmas? It looks like Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is what we need to break up the jolly holiday season with some blood and screams. This highly anticipated sequel drops on December 5, and it should make some serious bank. I’m looking forward to it as a gateway film for non-horror fans to get sucked into the genre. The property is also featured with a house at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights this year, and I’ll be experiencing a night at Freddy’s soon.
1. The Black Phone 2– This is the sequel I didn’t know I wanted or needed. The first Black Phone film is based on the Joe Hill short story and was a superb adaptation. This wasn’t a story or movie that needed a sequel, but it made money. You know what happens when a horror film makes money, right? You get sequels. When Black Phone 2 was announced, I was wary. When the first trailer for the new movie dropped, I was stoked. The direction appears to work for the continuation of the Grabber’s story, and I think Scott Derrickson has crafted a story and film that could be genuinely terrifying and satisfying. Black Phone 2 hits the big screen on October 17th, and we can watch the Grabber return to terrorize us.

See you at the silver scream… I mean screen,
